Closed Curves of Least Total Curvature

Abstract:

In this paper, we study closed curves in surfaces minimising integrals based on the total squared curvature. By considering the steepest descent flows for such integrals, we prove existence of critical points under very general conditions. In the case where the underlying surface has negative curvature, we show that the geodesics are isolated from any other critical points by an absolute energy gap.
